Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Concept:
Addition | Multiplication | Subtraction
Description:
Activity
Phase:
Foundation Phase (Gr R-3) & up
Number Range:
Goes beyond 20
Materials Needed:
Dice or DIY Dice | Pen/Pencil
Players:
2 or more

Players take turns to roll the two dice. Do calculations in addition, subtraction and multiplication each time they roll.

Purpose

  1.  Practice addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

Materials

  • Scrap paper
  • Pencils
  • 2 dices per pair

How to play:

Take turns to roll the two dice. Do the following calculations each time you roll:

  1. Add the two numbers shown on the dice
  2.  Find the difference between the two numbers
  3. Multiply the two numbers OR skip count (Grade 1)
  4.  Add the three numbers to get a score for that round

After 10 rounds the player with the highest total is the winner.

Variations:

  • To make the activity more challenging use 8, 10, 12 or 20-sided dice

For example:
Roll 6 and 3
6 + 3 = 9
6 – 3 = 3
6 x 3 = 18 OR
6, 12, 18 (3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18)
Score is:
9 + 3 + 18 = 30
