Purpose

Learners practice multiplication by making arrays

Materials

1. Counters
2. Bottle tops
3. Lego/duplo blocks
4. Cards/DIY Cards
5. Squares of paper

Instructions

1. Learners should have equal number of counters or materials in pairs or groups.
2. Give learners a multiplication problem and they will need to make the array that represents that problem.
3. Say the multiplication problem “3×3” and then form an array that has three rows and three columns. Ask the learners to show you the columns and the rows. Ask the learners to say how many counters there are in total in the array. Explain that the total number (9) is also the answer to the sum 3×3. 
4. Ask learners to make arrays in their groups for different multiplication problems. Say “Please make an array for the sum 3 x 4”. Learners should then make an array with 3 columns and 4 rows. The total number of counters will be 12. The first group who makes the array correctly and correctly says the number of counters in the array, wins.
5. Repeat the game as many times as you would like. Use these multiplication facts to make arrays. 3×4; 4×6; 7×3; 5×6; 9×3
